OGUN FLAGS OFF HPV VACCINATION IN SAGAMU LGA
As part of efforts to deepen awareness and improve coverage of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination, Ogun State has commenced a large-scale campaign and community outreach across Lukosi, Ogijo and Simawa communities in Sagamu Local Government Area.

The flag-off ceremony, organised by the Family Health Initiative Ogun (FAHIO) with support from Pathfinder International and the Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board (PHCDB), formed part of activities marking the 2025 World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day.

The event drew health workers, community and religious leaders, HPV Champions, and female learners aged nine, among others.
Chairperson of FAHIO, Mrs. Oluwakemi Balogun, reaffirmed the commitment of government and partner organisations to eliminating cervical cancer, noting that intensified efforts are underway to reach more eligible girls.

She commended stakeholders for their dedication to achieving the national target of cervical cancer elimination.

Similarly, the State Coordinator of Pathfinder International, Mr. Emah Udeme, underscored the importance of sustained sensitisation on HPV vaccination uptake. He stressed that the active participation of parents, as well as community and religious institutions, is crucial in ending the disease.

Delivering their goodwill messages, the State Coordinator of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), Dr. Folarin Solape, and a representative of the Executive Secretary, PHCDB, Dr. Israel Orire, urged the public to support government efforts by encouraging the vaccination of teenage girls to guard against cervical cancer.

During a presentation titled Understanding HPV and Preventing Cervical Cancer, a representative of the State Immunisation Unit, Mr. Olalekan Adebari, who described the HPV vaccine as a proven and essential preventive tool, said that the vaccine has been integrated into routine immunization.

Adebari urged parents, guardians and caregivers to present their teenage girls for the vaccination, assuring that it is safe, effective and free.

Eligible pupils from various schools were vaccinated during the flag-off activities held at Ogijo, Simawa and other designated health posts across Sagamu LGA.
