OGUN GOVT URGED TO INCREASE FUNDING FOR FAMILY PLANNING
Ogun State Government has been urged to ensure increase in funding of family planning services to enable women of child bearing age have free and access to quality services.
This was brought to the fore in Abeokuta during a media parley organized by the Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board (OGPHECADEB) and Family Health Initiative Ogun (FAHIO) with the support of United Nations Fund Population Agency ( UNFPA).
Speaking at the event, Chairperson of FAHIO, Mrs. Oluwakemi Balogun said it was imperative for the state government to make adequate fund available for the procurement of. more Family Planning commodities and consumables in order to address the challenge of unmet needs as well as preventing unplanned pregnancies, unsafe abortion and maternal mortality.
"I commend Prince Dapo Abiodun- led administration on its effort in the health sector particularly on reproductive health care services, but there is need to address the challenge of shortage of family planning commodities and consumables in the public health facilities across the state ", she said.
Mrs Balogun added that improved budgetary allocation for Family Planning activities would help in finding lasting solution of Last-Mile Distribution(LMD) and other logistic issues, as well as training of FP providers for effective service delivery.
In his presentation, the Head of Reproductive Health Unit of OGPHECADEB, Dr Temitope Oluwadare said more women are embracing various family planning methods due to the accrue benefits, noting that availability of commodities and consumables at Primary Health Centers would ease accessibility of FP services.
Contributing the State Family Planning Coordinator in the Board, Mrs Bolanle Adelani stated that Family Planning has been proven to be safe and effective enjoining women of child bearing age to always visit public health facilities for FP services and disregard myths and misconceptions about family planning.
