Ogun NUJ election: Cultists, thugs invade iwe iroyin

As the election of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun state council to elect the new officers that will pilot the affairs of the union in the state holds today, their is an alleged invasion of the union secretariat by thugs and cultists to cause chaos. 

According to investigation, the thugs and the cultists have been laying siege around iwe iroyin house to prevent some targeted members from coming inside to exercise their electoral franchise. 

Just yesterday night, the electoral committee headed by non member of the union, Abiodun Taiwo released the names of "eligible" voters where majority members in that list contain non members of the union and also fixed the election period from 7am to 10am this morning. 

Another twist in the electoral time table of the election is the usual manifesto nite among the candidates, which normally holds a day before the election and the business session on  the election day where financial report would be read to members before the dissolution of the entire exco were expunged from the electoral process by the committee. 

The cancellation of the manifesto night and business session might be linked with the petition before the outgoing leadership of the union at the EFCC regarding fraud and diversion of union funds to private accounts. 

In order to perpetuate itself in the office, the outgoing leadership constituted credentials committee to conduct election without following the electoral procedure such as revalidation exercise to know the exact members of the union according to the union constitution among others.

The committee has therefore jettisoned the constitution by compiling names of members with associate members that are not eligible to participate in the election for the process. 

In order to further bastardize the electoral process, the committee very late yesterday night fixed 7am to 10am this morning to hold the election of the  union. 

To even worsen the process, thugs and cultists were seen very early this morning around  the union secretariat to cause trouble by preventing targeted members from participating in the election. 

In view of the above, the security agents are implored to urgently swing into action so as to prevent bloodshed and loss of lives.
