GEOSON Members charge to embrace emerging technology
Members of the Geoinformation Society of Nigeria (GEOSON), Ogun State Chapter, have been urged to embrace and promote emerging technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence, digital mapping and other advanced geospatial technologies to enhance their professionalism and contribute more effectively to national development.
The charge was given by the Rector of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Arc. Dr. Babatunde Adekoya Jolaoso, who was the Chairman of the occasion at the investiture and award ceremony held for Surv. Quadri Abideen Oniru Rabiu, MNIS, at the NIS Multipurpose Hall, Magbon, Abeokuta.
Jolaoso said geoinformation science had evolved into a specialised field of knowledge and professional practice, stressing the need to reposition GIS professionals from being mere data managers to strategic decision-makers and critical partners in development.
According to him, geospatial technology has become a digital landscape upon which governments, businesses and industries increasingly depend to plan, manage resources, make informed decisions and build a sustainable future.
He expressed optimism that GEOSON would become a force to reckon with globally, given the growing relevance of geospatial technologies to development.
The Rector noted that the era of traditional governance and analogue planning was becoming increasingly inadequate, if not obsolete, in addressing the scale and complexity of contemporary development challenges.
He explained that the services of geospatial professionals cut across various sectors, including agricultural planning, infrastructure development and the management of ecological challenges such as flooding, erosion and deforestation.
Jolaoso charged the newly elected executives to justify the confidence reposed in them by members by leading with compassion, competence, capacity and consistency.
He also urged them to make transparency their watchword and remain committed to the advancement and development of the profession.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected Chairman of GEOSON, Ogun State Chapter, Surv. Quadri Abideen Oniru Rabiu, expressed appreciation to members for the confidence reposed in him and his team.
Rabiu said the aspirations and efforts of the founding fathers of the association must not be allowed to go in vain, assuring members that the new leadership would uphold, maintain and sustain the development and welfare of members.
He said the mandate given to the new executive was deeply appreciated, promising to take the association to the next level.
Earlier, the President of GEOSON, Surv. Olayinka-Dosunmu Dupe Nihinlola, said Ogun State had been at the forefront of the association since its establishment and had made significant contributions to the development of the state.
She noted that the geospatial profession was barely recognised years ago when the geo-ecosystem began to emerge, but the efforts of the founding fathers in Lagos and Ogun states had contributed significantly to its growth and acceptance.
According to her, professionals across the country have continued to come together under one umbrella to contribute their expertise to impactful and developmental decisions.
The outgoing Chairman of GEOSON, Ogun State Chapter, Surv. Shakiru Adeola Bello, advised the newly elected executive to build on the achievements of previous administrations and sustain the good foundation laid by their predecessors.
Bello urged the new leadership to continue pursuing the aspirations of the founding fathers and take the association to greater heights during its two-year tenure.
He recalled that, under his leadership as the pioneer chairman of GEOSON in Ogun State, the chapter won the award for the best-performing chapter in the country on two occasions.
He expressed confidence in the ability of the new leadership to further advance the association and strengthen its contributions to the geospatial profession.
The event was attended by the Surveyor-General of Ogun State, Surv. Oladele Ewulo; His Royal Highness, Oba James Obafemi Saliu; the Vice-President, International, Surv. Adedayo Adelakun, among other dignitaries with an award presentation to outstanding members and executives.
