Ogun Govt Says Gaseous Odour in Ijebu Axis Under Control
The Ogun State Government has assured residents that the situation arising from an unusual gaseous odour reported in parts of the Ijebu axis is under control, as investigations continue into the incident that sent scores of secondary school students to hospitals on Wednesday.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Strategy, Hon. Kayode Akinmade, gave the assurance on behalf of the state government following reports that students in Ijebu-Ode, Ijebu-Igbo and Ago-Iwoye were affected by the offensive odour, with several requiring medical attention.

More than 30 students received medical attention at a general hospital during an assessment visit by government officials, while some affected students from other schools were reportedly taken to other health facilities for treatment.

Medical assessments of the students treated at the hospital reportedly revealed symptoms including shortness of breath, stomach disorders and drowsiness. While some students required oxygen to stabilise their conditions, others received less intensive medical care.

By the time the government assessment team left the hospital, most of the affected students had been discharged, while a few remained under medical observation.

The team subsequently visited Ijebu-Igbo Girls Grammar School to assess the situation and investigate the incident, including examining the surrounding environment for possible sources of the odour.

Findings from the field assessment suggested that the unusual smell was not restricted to school premises, as residents of neighbouring communities also reported experiencing it. The Chairman of Ijebu North Local Government Area was among those who confirmed perceiving the odour, including at the council secretariat.

A team from the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) also arrived at the scene to participate in the assessment and investigation.

The latest incident has renewed concerns over recurring episodes of offensive gaseous odour in the Ijebu axis, particularly in Ijebu-Ode, where similar occurrences have reportedly been recorded since April 2026.

In an earlier statement, the Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, attributed the recurring emissions to a natural geological phenomenon involving underground gas emissions associated with geological formations and tectonic fault lines. He reportedly ruled out sabotage and a gas pipeline leak as possible causes.

However, the latest incident, which affected multiple communities and resulted in the hospitalisation of students, has heightened calls for a comprehensive investigation to establish the source of the odour and determine its possible health and environmental implications.

The ongoing assessment by the state government and relevant regulatory authorities is expected to provide further information on the geographical spread of the incident, its underlying causes and the measures required to prevent a recurrence.

Residents have been urged to remain calm as investigations continue and authorities monitor the condition of the affected students.
