Ogun Speaker Charges Learners On Determination For Success, Preparation For The Future
The Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide has charged learners in the State to start preparing for their future endeavours by now, saying their determination for success is a key indication that the future of Nigeria as a Nation is very bright.

Rt. Hon. Elemide gave this charge during the 2026 11th Edition of the State National Quiz Competition On Legislature and Democracy For Secondary School Students, organised by the National Institute For Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), held at the Ogun State House of Assembly Complex, Abeokuta enjoined students to raise their heads high anywhere they meet themselves.

The Speaker said "Ogun State is known for the best in everything, be it in academics, health or sports, just mention any key and prospective areas, we are the pace setter. We lead while other States follows, hence the need for you to sustain the legacy of our founding fathers by coming out the best in the remaining competitions",

Elemide implored the participants to imbibe the culture of good competition and sportsmanship and to showcase themselves as the best at the Zonal and National level of the competition, thanking the NILDS for putting up such competition that tends to improve the knowledge of the learners on Legislative and Democratic issues and activities.

In his remarks, the Ogun State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu expressed his profound appreciation to the Honourable Speaker and the entire leadership and membership of the Ogun State House of Assembly for graciously providing the legislative environment for the competition, saying the gesture goes beyond providing a venue, but offers the students the rare opportunity to physically experience the environment where laws are deliberated, debated and enacted.

Prof. Arigbabu represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Oluwatosin Oloko commended NILDS for sustaining the initiative, adding that the competition provides an important platform for secondary school students to deepen their understanding of legislative practice, democratic governance, civic responsibility and the institutions of democracy.

"I encourage you to compete with confidence, discipline, integrity and respect for one another. Do not be intimidated by the brilliance of another contestant, let it inspire you. Do not be discouraged by a difficult question, but let it challenge you. And do not define your success only by the winning position at the end of the competition, but define it by the knowledge you acquire, the confidence you develop and the lessons you take away from this experience", Arigbabu Charges.

In his address, the Director-General of NILDS, Prof. Abubarkar Sulaimon explained that the competition was to promote awareness and understanding of the legislature, democracy, and governance among young Nigerians, and to nurture in them the values of participation,
accountability, and patriotism, saying democracy is sustained not only by laws and institutions, but
also by an informed citizenry, and the legislature, especially when the youth, understand its role, powers, and limitations.

Prof. Sulaimon represented by the Executive Officer in the Institute, Miss Hassanat Ganiyu noted that the competition is more than an academic exercise, but also a deliberate investment in the future of democracy, noting that this year’s edition is the 11th anniversary of a vision that began as a modest idea strictly for schools within the FCT that has now touched schools across every geopolitical zone of Nigeria.

"To our dear students, I say you are the future custodians of Nigeria’s democracy. What you learn here goes beyond quiz questions. It is about leadership, integrity, teamwork, and respect for diverse
opinions. These are the very principles that sustain democratic governance. Compete with passion, but also with fairness and humility", Sulaimon said.

Speaking, the Quiz Master Dr. Kolapo Abayomi charged the victorious students and their school not to rest on their oars but to immediately commence rigorous preparation for the Zonal Phase, where champions from other South West States will compete for a slot at the National Finals in Abuja.

Dr. Abayomi noted that winning at the state level is only the first step, and the task ahead requires greater commitment, discipline, and teamwork to make Ogun State proud at the national stage, as he lauded the Ogun State Government for its sustained investment in the education sector, describing it as the foundation for nurturing future leaders.

In their appreciative notes, the winners of the State Competition, Rita Nweke and Azeezat Olajide of Iganmode Grammar School, Ota ascribed their success to the goodness of God and promised to make the State proud at the next level of the competition.
